Athanasy is a collection of paintings made from natural substances such as quartz and rock powder pigment that I have collected through field research trips, hand-ground, and applied to raw linen through a labor-intensive process of fine layering. The works are simple, stripped to a minimal singular form, or complex. The larger works include a dialogue of forms, interweaving a narrative within the painting. Through extensive research into contemporary science, the fundamental elements of nature, the mathematics behind aesthetics and the energy potential in the material object, the works incorporate a distinct symbolic language that I have developed over many years. The diagrams are not just figures, like an Egyptian hieroglyph, they contain within them the inexorable law that prescribes it, and the inevitable consequence that this law provokes. The subtle tones and abstract forms hope to evoke an intuitive response in the viewer, inviting them to enter into a kind of meditative state which enables access to different realms of consciousness.
