INVOCATIONS
DESCRIPTION
-
I am interested in what can be communicated through art. I have always loved the written word and poetry, but I understand art as something that is able to reach beyond language into something slightly beyond logical comprehension. I believe that we are able to absorb information and concepts from an image using the intuitive part of the intellect. To the ancient Egyptian, hieroglyphs were symbolic forms that not only described something, but also themselves contained the essence of the thing they were describing.
Invocations, is a series of ceramic sculptures with my own encoded hieroglyph poems inscribed on the surface. Reminiscent of Ancient Greek or Egyptian vessels, the symbols look familiar and foreign simultaneously. I wrote the series of poems alongside creating their symbolic alphabet a couple of years ago. A translation of the poems are not provided with the works, since deciphering the text is not the intention, only the essence of what is being communicated remains. The hand built sculptures are glazed using traditional natural glazing techniques such as iron oxide and terra sig and engraved using sgraffito.
