CELESTIAL SPHERE

SILVERPOINT DRAWINGS
DESCRIPTION

The Celestial Sphere is an imaginary dome used by astronomers to describe the position of the stars as seen from the Earth.
The inspiration for this project was informed during a residency at a telescope farm in the Atacama dessert, Chile in 2011. During my time there I studied the patterns and movement of stars and planets. Meditating on the idea that there was a grand celestial symphony underlying the geometry of their motion, I started to envision each star as centre of energy, connecting throughout the cosmos through web like grids, or as synapses of a great brain.
The drawings in this series are based on celestial maps. Using data of each stars brightness, size and position in relation to the Earth, and contained within the encompassing sphere, each star is connected to every other star via circles or lines, following specific mathematical algorithms. They are created using silverpoint on a clay based ground, a medium which reacts with light to give a shimmering metallic glow. Representing the notion of interconnectedness of all life, from afar they can be understood as mapping matter on the atomic or molecular level as well as the macrocosmic.
